74C14 HEX SCHMITT TRIGGER

Hex Inverting Schmitt Trigger (6-gate inverter chip with hysteresis).
This chip is often considered the heart of Nv net technology, since each Schmitt inverter is individually-accessible (and so each, along with a capacitor, can be turned into a Nv neuron).

The MM74C14 Hex Schmitt Trigger is a monolithic comple-
mentary MOS (CMOS) integrated circuit constructed with
N- and P-channel enhancement transistors. The positive
and negative going threshold voltages VT+ and VT−, show
low variation with respect to temperature (typ. 0.0005V/°C
at VCC = 10V), and hysteresis, VT
+− VT−≥ 0.2VCC is guar-
anteed.

All inputs are protected from damage due to static dis-
charge by diode clamps to VCC and GND.

■Wide supply voltage range: 3.0V to 15V
■High noise immunity: 0.70 V
CC (typ.)
■Low power: TTL compatibility:
0.4 VCC (typ.) 0.2 VCC guaranteed
■Hysteresis: 0.4 V
CC (typ.): 0.2 VCC guaranteed

4017 DECADE COUNTER
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 74HC/HCT4017 are high-speed Si-gate CMOS
devices and are pin compatible with the “4017” of the
“4000B” series. They are specified in compliance with
JEDEC standard no. 7A.
The 74HC/HCT4017 are 5-stage Johnson decade
counters with 10 decoded active HIGH outputs (Q0 to Q9),
an active LOW output from the most significant flip-flop
(Q5-9), active HIGH and active LOW clock inputs (CP0 and
CP1) and an overriding asynchronous master reset input
(MR).
The counter is advanced by either a LOW-to-HIGH
transition at CP0 whileCP1 is LOW or a HIGH-to-LOW
transition at CP1 while CP0 is HIGH (see also function
table).
When cascading counters, theQ5-9 output, which is LOW
while the counter is in states 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, can be used
to drive the CP0 input of the next counter.
A HIGH on MR resets the counter to zero
(Q0=Q5-9=HIGH; Q1 to Q9=LOW) independent of the
clock inputs (CP0 andCP1).
Automatic code correction of the counter is provided by an
internal circuit: following any illegal code the counter
returns to a proper counting mode within 11 clock pulses.
FEATURES
• Output capability: standard
• ICC category: MSI

4046 VCO CHIP
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 74HC/HCT4046A are high-speed Si-gate CMOS
devices and are pin compatible with the “4046” of the
“4000B” series. The 74HC/HCT4046A are phase-locked-loop circuits that
comprise a linear voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and
three different phase comparators (PC1, PC2 and PC3)
with a common signal input amplifier and a common
comparator input.

The signal input can be directly coupled to large voltage
signals, or indirectly coupled (with a series capacitor) to
small voltage signals. A self-bias input circuit keeps small
voltage signals within the linear region of the input
amplifiers. With a passive low-pass filter, the “4046A”
forms a second-order loop PLL. The excellent VCO
linearity is achieved by the use of linear op-amp
techniques.

The Velostat

Velostat is a carbon impregnated polypropylene.  The plastic itself would have a conductivity of zero.  The carbon allows for a little conductivity.  This property makes it quite handy as a shielding material.  The other attractive quality is it that is essentially plastic film.  As such, it can be used in  a myriad ways, including liners in fabric.

The actual term Velostat is the trade name  (much like Kleenex is for tissue) created by the manufacturer: 3M.  There are some current of brands coming to the market.

here are some of the numbers I stole from the interwebs:

3M™ Velostat™ 1880 Properties
Property Typical Value
Material Polypropylene
Thickness 0.125 in. (3,2 mm)
Hardness 70-75 Shore A
*Resistance
(Surface to Ground) 4 x 102 ohms
(Surface to Surface) 2 x 102 ohms
**Resistivity 102 ohms-cm
*Tested per ESD Association Standard S4.1 at 72oF, 50% RH using
3M 701 Test Kit for Static Control Surfaces (Megohmmeter)
**Tested per ASTM D 257

My physical description:  Velostat is a black plastic with one matte side, and another with a slight luster.  It is more substantial than black trash bags and does seem to have the capacity for static build up that many plastic films do.

Intended uses:

The intended use for the velostat was a semi-soft capacitor.  The labor and size for the product seems to outweigh most benefits for such use.  However, one has been made.  The velostat is used as the insulating material.  Given it’s slight ability to past current. the theory is that it will have a more favorable dielectric constant.  This will be compared to a similar but larger model made with clear cling wrap as in insulator.

If this fails, one possible imaginary use for the material would be the indoor/outdoor umbrella.  Since velostat intended as a shielding agent, and that many joke that the distributors of such products are protecting their brainwaves from aliens, it makes sense to create a fashionable alternative.  This would be an umbrella made of layers of various shielding materials and finishing with sexy black Velostat.  It would protect you from the elements outside and from EMF regardless of location.  If created large enough, one could have a portable Cone of EMF Silence (CoES - I made that up and I am trademarking it - right now.)

Liquid crystals are chemical compounds and mixtures that exhibit the mechanical properties of liquids and the optical characteristics of solids. Liquid crystals that change color with changes in temperature are known as thermochromic liquid crystals (TLCs). Their scientific name is cholesteric liquid crystals.

The cholesteric (also known as chiral nematic) liquid crystal phase consists of molecules in a helical structure, containing a chiral (non-symmetrical) center, which produces intermolecular forces that favor alignment between molecules at a slight angle to one another.

This leads to the formation of a structure that can be visualized as a stack of very thin 2-D nematic-like layers with the director in each layer twisted with respect to those above and below. The variation of the director axis tends to be periodic in nature. The period of this variation (the distance over which a full rotation of 360° is completed) is known as the pitch, p. The pitch is varying with temperature and it can also be affected by the boundary conditions when the chiral nematic liquid crystal is sandwiched between two substrate planes.

Commonly used in LCD displays (example: alarm clock)

Feverscan, by LCR Hallcrest

FeverScan products utilize thermo chromic liquid crystal (TLS) technology for the measurement of clinical temperature trends in the healthcare environment. Liquid crystals are chemical compounds and mixtures that exhibit the mechanical properties of liquids and the optical characteristics of solids. FeverScan thermometers are composed of a series of discrete temperature events, each event shows a green color as the indicated temperature is attained.

Electrical and Physical Characteristics:

Veriflex E2 is a two-part resin system consisting of the base resin, Veriflex E2a, and the curing agent, Veriflex E2b. Cured Veriflex E2 employs shape memory properties with the high toughness and strength of epoxy. When heated above its activation temperature, cured Veriflex E2 changes from a rigid plastic to an elastic state. It can then be twisted, pulled, bent, and stretched. When cooled, the polymer hardens and can hold its deformed shape. If heated again, it returns to the shape in which it was cured. This process can be repeated without loss of the memory shape or degradation of the material. It can be cast and cured into a variety of “memorized” shapes, depending on the application requirements.  Veriflex E2 system owns a very sharp modulus transition curve, yielding a quick recovery to the “memory” shape upon heating past the transition temperature.

Intended+Imagined Uses:

Veriflex E2 can be utilized for the following purposes,

* Customized, reusable molds

* Deployable mechanisms and structures

* Adjustable, customizable furniture

* Reformable toys

* Customized containers, shipping and packaging

* Actuators

* Sensors

* Space-qualifiable applications
